SUMMARY:Seret Film Festival: Seven Blessings
DESCRIPTION:שבע ברכות \nDrama \nDirector: Ayelet Menahemi \nProducers: Ronen Ben Tal\, Moshe Edery\, Leon Edery \nLength: 108 min \nCast: Reimonde Amsalem\, Smadar Sela\, Tiki Dayan\, Daniel Sabag\, Idit Teperson\, Rivka Bahar \nLanguage: Hebrew\, Arabic\, French \nWhen Marie was just two years old\, her mother adhered to a common Moroccan custom and gifted her to her infertile sister. Fast forward 40 years\, Marie finds herself traveling from France to Israel\, where her family now resides\, to marry her beloved. Amidst the warmth and excitement of her family\, who are busy preparing for the tradition of the “Seven Blessings” – a week filled with celebratory meals in honor of the bride – Marie carries with her unresolved pain from the past. As the week unfolds\, secrets and lies emerge\, opening old wounds. Marie yearns for an apology\, while her family believes she should be expressing gratitude. What was meant to be a week of celebration transforms into a bittersweet tale of family dynamics\, forgiveness\, and the weight of past grievances. \nDirected by Ayelet Menahemi\, Seven Blessings presents complex relationship dynamics against a backdrop of familial and communal oppression. Despite the heavy themes\, the film retains wit and humor\, as well as stunning performances from the cast. \nBefore the film screening\, there is also a talk at 6:15pm by Marc Codron\, Senior Director for the world’s leading Jewish humanitarian organization\, The Joint (JDC’s). Marc is a resident of Israel’s south and will talk about Israel’s lesser known ‘other’ war being fought within its borders – the severe plight of the country’s most vulnerable citizens as victims of the Gaza war. Marc will share his personal experiences of loss\, tragedy\, miracles and bravery in the wake of the October 7 massacre\, and of the new normal living with war on your doorstep.

This day commemorates the hillula (celebration\, interpreted by some as the anniversary of death) of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai\, a Mishnaic sage and leading disciple of Rabbi Akiva in the 2nd century. It is also recognized as the day on which he revealed the deepest secrets of Kabbalah in the form of the Zohar (Book of Splendor)\, a significant text of Jewish mysticism. The association with Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai has led to various customs and practices on Lag Ba’Omer\, such as the lighting of bonfires and pilgrimages to his tomb in the northern Israeli town of Meron\, along with observances at the tomb itself. Over time\, this minor Jewish festival has come to symbolize the resilience of the Jewish spirit.

SUMMARY:Brighton Walking Tour (with a Jewish Twist)
DESCRIPTION:Stroll through 250 years of Jewish history in Brighton. Our walking tour combines historic and religious sites with fascinating stories.\n\n\nAbout the Tour: \nThis guided walking tour starts in the heart of historic Brighton\, at the entrance to the city Museum. \nFrom there\, our walk will take us on a journey through Brighton’s history including details of events and places where the Jewish community has been a central part of life in the city since the 18th century. \nWe will wind our way through the streets and ‘twittens’ of the Old Town\, noting Blue Plaques to some of its former Jewish residents and hearing their stories\, discovering near-forgotten sites of Jewish shops and schools in the heart of Brighton\, and also visiting the location of its early synagogues. This one of a kind tour is not to be missed! \nAbout our Guide: \nMarc Gardiner is an enthusiastic tour guide with a passion for the history and geography of the places that he visits. Originally a qualified accountant and now a part-time university lecturer\, Marc has a Master’s degree in Modern Jewish History and is also an official City of London tour guide. He lives with his family in both London and Brighton. \nUseful Information: \n\nMeeting point: Entrance to Brighton Museum & Art Gallery\nEnd point: We’ll end our tour back at the Royal Pavilion Gardens.\nCost: £15 per person.\nDuration: 90 mins\nClothing: It is often colder on the seafront than inland so please wear suitable clothing. It’s also a good idea to check the weather forecast and bring waterproofs if rain is forecasted.
