Delve into the harrowing events surrounding the infamous ‘Polish Action’ of 1938\, which marked the first mass deportation of Jews from Germany. This exhibition sheds light on the plight of 17\,000 Jews with Polish passports who found themselves abruptly uprooted\, arrested\, and violently transported across the Polish border. \nAmidst the backdrop of escalating Nazi persecution against Eastern European Jews\, this expulsion unfolded as a shock to those who had called Germany home for generations. Stripped of their belongings and thrust into uncertainty\, they faced unimaginable challenges as they crossed into an unprepared town at the border. \nThrough compelling narratives and historical artifacts\, witness the humanitarian crisis that unfolded\, with hundreds injured and dozens perishing in their quest for refuge. Despite the overwhelming adversity\, solidarity emerged within the Polish-Jewish community and aid from organizations like the American Joint Distribution Committee provided a glimmer of hope amidst despair. \nThis exhibition marks the 85th anniversary of the expulsion.

His publications include Leonard Cohen: The Mystical Roots of Genius\, Britain’s Jews\, and The Talmud: A Biography. \nAbout the Book: \nMillions of visitors flood to Venice every year. Yet many are unaware of its history – one of dramatic expansion but also of rapid decline. And essential to any history of Venice during its glory days is the story of its Jewish population. Venice gave the world the word ghetto. Astonishingly\, the ghetto prison turned out to be as remarkable a place as the city of Venice itself. \nWith sound scholarship and a narrator’s skill\, Harry Freedman tells the story of Venice’s Jews. From the founding of the ghetto in 1516\, to the capture of Venice by Napoleon in 1798\, he describes the remarkable cultural renaissance that took place in the Venice ghetto. Gates and walls notwithstanding\, for the first time in European history Jews and Christians mingled intellectually\, learned from each other\, shared ideas and entered modernity together. When it came to culture\, the ghetto walls were porous. \nNo history of Venice and its Jews can ignore the story of Shakespeare’s Shylock. The cultural and political revival in the Venice ghetto plays no part in the story of this fictional character. Who\, we wonder\, was Shylock? Would the people of Venice have recognized him and what did Shakespeare really think of him? Shakespeare’s ambivalent anti-Semitism reflects attitudes to Jews in Elizabethan England – but as Freedman demonstrates\, Shakespeare’s myth is wholly ignorant of the literary\, cultural and interfaith revival that Shylock would have experienced.

DESCRIPTION:Laughter yoga is a unique concept created by Indian medical Doctor Madan Kataria in 1995. It allows everyone to laugh\, smile\, and giggle for no reason\, without relying on jokes\, humour\, or comedy. This practice is excellent for our general wellbeing\, particularly our emotional and mental health. \nWe initiate laughter yoga in a group setting\, encouraging eye contact and childlike playfulness. Quickly\, it transforms into genuine\, contagious laughter. The name “laughter yoga” reflects its combination of easy\, fun laughter exercises\, breathing techniques\, and simple stretches suitable for everyone\, whether seated or standing. \nLaughter yoga is grounded in the scientific fact that the body cannot differentiate between real and fake laughter\, leading to the release of feel-good hormones such as dopamine\, serotonin\, and oxytocin. \nWe recommend wearing loose clothing\, bringing water\, and approaching the session with curiosity. \nAbout our instructor: \nAnn O’Keife loves to help others to live their lives to the fullest. Ann has over 30 years experience in personal growth. She is a caring\, down to earth and professional person centred Counsellor\, Healer\, Hypnotherapist\, PSYCH-K facilitator\, Rune reader and teacher\, Creative writing tutor and Laughter yoga teacher. \nAnn runs the Gratitude Group Sussex that organises Gratitude walks in and around Shoreham and Sussex. She is a UK Grandmother Beacon (part of the Grandmothers Net of Light organisation Worldwide) and holds monthly meditations and journeys for free.
